On Your Next Holiday Visit The Caribbean

The West Indies, currently known as the Caribbean, is a group of countries and territories which encompasses the string of islands and the sea (Caribbean Sea) surrounding it. The archipelago is enclosed by North, Central, andSouth America. Christopher Columbus mistakenly believed in the early part of 1490s that he had came to the “Indies” part of Asia, thus the nameWest Indies. These days, the Caribbean belongs to the most famous cruise and holiday spots in the world.

History

The West Indian history started before the European colonizers came to the archipelago. Three native groups namely the Arawaks, the Ciboney, and the Caribs inhabited greater part of the islands as early as 1500BC. With the appearance of the earliest European in the person of Christopher Columbus in 1492 and the creation of the first Spaniard settlement in 1496, the native people have been gradually forced to disperse out from their very own land.

By 1600s, other European countries have already fought and claimed islands in the region. The West Indies was divided by territories under Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the British Empire. Several places prospered into trading spots and others, into sugarcane farms cultivated by slaves from Africa. The European superpowers remained strongholds until the the first part of the twentieth century. The United States made its presence in the West Indian history in the 19th century, when it impacted and dominated the Caribbeaneconomic climate. While the majority of the islands have received independence, a few still continues to be colonies of European countries till today.

People, Traditions, and Way of life

The West Indian ancestry is a mixture of the natives and the citizens from the foreign nations which colonized them. Dominant races consist of Africans, English, French, Italian, Spanish, and some Indian and Chinese. The twenty-seven nations and territories have an estimated population of 37.5 million in 2000.

The Caribbean is diverse in cultures and traditions as affected by the European occupation before in addition to the influential nearby countries in North andSouth America. Nevertheless the people are also able to maintain the practices and emblems unique in the region. Today, both evolved and authentic cultures made the West Indian ancestry exotic and invitingly wonderful to the rest of the world.
